Hi all, I guess I have to make a public response to Pat O'Malley's hard luck
report re the Glossies, Western Whipbirds, and PC Lorikeets.
Pat old son, my friends and I have had similarly frustrating trips to the
island and I fully commiserate with your present disappointment. Locals on
the island often assert that the first two species are easily found at the
locations (plural)I gave you before your trip. Pigs they are!! Only once, in
Sept/Oct have we found the Whipbirds where they are supposed to be ( eleven
sightings in two days), and even then one has to go at first by listening
for them. If they don't call one has little chance. I have also scoured all
the five reputed locations(ie all the good casuarina spots)for the Glossies
quite a few times, but again have only been successful once, also in
Sept/Oct in Lathami CP.

But the Loris! They have never presented too much of a problem, last time we
were there they were in the gum trees in the garden of our accommodation
unit at the end of the main street,so we didn't raise the local SES by
lurking around the street.

You'll just have to go again Pat, I'll even come with you next time, given
an adequate supply of scotch and red wine.

It looks as though you found most of the other island specials, including
the Hooded Plovers which are quite abundant around the beaches. No mention
of the Stone Curlews at Fliders Chase end?, maybe they weren't a target for
you like they are for us SA'ers.

Good to hear you returned home safely from the wilds of SA. Cheers for now.
Tony.
