birding-aus
Hi all,
Yesterday I saw 2 Black Falcons looking suspiciously like they might be
nesting. They were at Morris Ck, near the Haughton River between Townsville
and Ayr. They were perched in Melaleucas above a stick nest (about corvid
size) and defended the area against Whistling Kites which were nesting 50 m
away. Then they both flew off. There were no chicks in the nest and
doubtless no eggs either.
Identification from dark morph Brown Falcon in poor light was based on
uniformly dark flight feathers, short grey legs, smallish head, flat wings
in soaring and gliding flight, and fast shallow flicking wingbeats rather
than deep rowing wingbeats.
Black falcons are seen occasionaly in NEQ. This is a long way north and
coastal of the usual breeding range. The Atlas contains a breeding record
from the Coast at Gladstone (c. 900 km ? S) and one from sunshine coast
(hinterland?). If anyone is interested in checking it out I can provide
directions.
cheers.
