birding-aus
If anybody out there is interested, there are at least two Terek
Sandpipers back at Fishery Point in Botany Bay. This is the first time
I have seen them there for about two years.
There was quite a nice little collection of waders there yesterday
(Sunday) morning, driven close in by a rising tide, though no rarities:
Grey-tailed Tattlers, Golden Plover, Curlew, Curlew-sandpiper, the
numerous Bar-tailed Godwits, and a lone Whimbrel, who is often there
hanging out with the Godwits. Interestingly, one of the Godwits was
already in almost full russet breeding plumage, and one of the
Curlew-sandpipers also seemed to be coming into breeding plumage. It
had acquired indistinct, broad and irregular bands across its flanks and
belly, and caused me a few minutes puzzlement before I decided it could
only be a CS. The bars appeared just dark, rather than particularly
reddish. Is this normal for these birds when changing plumage?
