Went to Bobbin Head on Saturday. Had a good few hours.
Saw...
1. GLOSSY-BLACK COCKATOOS - four feeding quietly in Casuarinas on hill
above the Bobbin Head Inn/eatery. I was down outside the NPWS shop when
I heard what sounded like a Red-tailed Black Cockatoo call. I got
excited and walked up the start of the Birrawanna (?) track to look, and
found the birds. They were gorging themselves. I enjoyed watching their
eating ahbits... twisting the seed with their feet and discarding the
outer parts, eating the flesh inside. They were very skillfull. The
cracking of the seed/nut was loud and that gave away their presence. I
watched them for a good twenty minutes and had immaculate views. This
was only the fourth time I'd seen them and the closest to Sydney.
2. Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos - Saw two in eucalypt/banksia ridge
forest on the Sphinx Trail.
3. LYREBIRD - Sphinx trail - heard one on dense slope of north-western
side of gully leading to creek.
Also went up the mountains on Saturday...
1. GREY CURRAWONG - Pierce's Pass, ridgetop, Bell's Line of Road.
2. MASKED or BARN OWl - Heard a loud screech in southern section of
forest down road from Blackheath station. Forest on way to Conimbla,
near farmland.
3. GREATER GLIDER - A tick for me!!!!!!!!!! Several spotted in canopy of
dense wet schlerophyll forest in this same area down from Blackheath
station.
