There is a very good description of this written by Douglas Futuyma which should be in the BirdChat's archives at: http://listserv.arizona.edu/cgi-bin/wa?S1=birdchat Unfortunately, that server has been down the last couple of days when I've tried to look for it. Just search under "phylogenetic species" or "PSC" and look for the post by him. He knows what he is talking about on this subject.
