Pat
I hope you have kept the specimen - wrap it in several plastic bags and
freeze it.
It should be taken to the Museum of Victoria Bird Department, at 71
Victoria Crescent Abbotsford. Rory O'Brien will be delighted to receive it
I'm sure - no matter what its condition. Give him a call on 9284 0203.
With specimen back-up, interesting records can be substantiated, properly
documented and the specimen retained (as either a skin, skeletal or spirit
specimen) for posterity.

Subject: RFI Southern Boobook
Could someone help me with an identification?
At Christmas Hills in outer-outer Melbourne suburbia (dry hilly semi-open
woodland at the moment) I found a roadkilled Southern Boobook.
It was very dark and glossy chocolate brown, pretty uniform, with brilliant
white spots on the breast, each spot washed with a sky blue irridescence.
Really beautiful bird. But I couldn't open the eyes to check eye colour (To
be honest I was a bit squeamish about poking around too vigorously). Is
this likely to be the race Leucopsis ? Pizzey and Knight suggest this
migrates from Tassie - but the bird much more closely resembled the various
field guide illustrations of the highly unlikely Larinda.
many thanks in advance
