Could someone help me with an identification? At Christmas Hills in outer-outer Melbourne suburbia (dry hilly semi-open woodland at the moment) I found a roadkilled Southern Boobook. It was very dark and glossy chocolate brown, pretty uniform, with brilliant white spots on the breast, each spot washed with a sky blue irridescence. Really beautiful bird. But I couldn't open the eyes to check eye colour (To be honest I was a bit squeamish about poking around too vigorously). Is this likely to be the race Leucopsis ? Pizzey and Knight suggest this migrates from Tassie - but the bird much more closely resembled the various field guide illustrations of the highly unlikely Larinda. many thanks in advance Pat Pat O'Malley |
