I haven't played the whole tape yet, but the distortion was noticable
on the "trailers" at the start of the tape and into episode 8 for as
far as I watched (several minutes.) The problem is most noticable in
stereo, but can also be heard to a lesser extent on the (low fi) mono
soundtrack.
If you compare the sound of the trailers on each tape, you should
be able to hear the distortion if it is present. The trailers do
have more background hiss than the actual program - this is normal.
The distortion is a "boomy" sound particularly on loud sections,
and sounds like someone talking loudly into a microphone, or a
cassette tape that has been recorded at too high a signal level
(i.e. clipping.)
Let me know if your tapes are distortion free; if they are, I'll
return my copy to the Canberra store and pick one up in Melbourne
instead.
