thanks for providing answers to my questions. Your answers lead me to
conclude that your bird is not an Orange-bellied Parrot Neophema
chrysogaster for the following reasons:
OBPs have bright grass green upperparts, including the upper tail
adults have a bright blue frontal band
the alarm call is a very distinctive harsh buzz
the breast should be green not yellow
they have no red on them, only a variable orange patch low on the belly -
between the legs
I cannot identify your bird from the info available but suggest you check
Joe Forshaw's "Parrots of the World". It has excellent illustrations of all
species. If you have reason to think that the bird is an Australian species
then I suggest that Red-rumped Parrot is a possibility - because you
suggest that the bird has a red patch on the back between the wings.

Hi Peter,
Here is the description of my mystery bird:
1. light green cheeks
2. parakeet - like, taupe coloured lore
3. no frontal band
4. none
5. no red colour in the wing
6. call: high-pitched warning call, (one call), then call reminiscent
of water, all in high tones
More description of colour:-
- yellow breast
-light green back and head
-large red patch on back of abdomen between wings
-shades of irridescent blue on front of wing and head
-a few small yellow feathers on wing "leading edge"
-parakeet -like grey tail
-eye:black iris with grey pupil
Hope this will help. If you cannot identify the bird with this
description I can buy some polaroid film, take a few shots
and send them by snail mail.
