Dear Chris,
Several residents near Ashbury in the Canterbury area have sighted an owl(s)
near the Cooks River. It is a very large owl, very majestic, and we believe
it is either a Powerful Owl or a Barking Owl. Every so often there are just
the wings of small birds found lying on the ground.
Not being avid bird watchers, we just thought this was interesting.
However, Canterbury Council has now allowed night racing on Canterbury Race
Track. The race track, one of the oldest in Sydney, is nestled into
parklands and suburbia near the poor old polluted Cooks River.
I am now feeling that the Plovers that nest near the grand stand, some other
birds that whistle through the night and this big old owl... along with
those little bats that we see sometimes might be in for a bit of
disturbance.
Would our owl be unique to the area? Needless to say, we are not very happy
about night racing but maybe something can be done to protect the birdlife.
How do we officially get the area surveyed in case some of these birds are
endangered? You see, there is a big effort by residents to rejuvenate the
Cooks River and its parklands back to their original ecosystems.
Is there a person living in the Canterbury area who can help us document
what's here? While we like those night birds... we really have only come to
appreciate them while having a few drinks in a backyard or taking the kids
star gazing.
Can you help?
Best regards,
Ric Purcell
