Hi to all,
To enable intending overseas and interstate visitors to the North
Western Australia area to plan ahead the Broome Bird Observatory's program
for next year is as follows:-

BROOME BIRD OBSERVATORY - 1999 PROGRAM OF EVENTS

WAVE THE WADERS GOODBYE COURSES:

In 1999 there are two 5-day courses scheduled when the migratory waders
depart for their breeding grounds in the far northern hemisphere.

The first course starts 28 March and finishes on the 2 April. The second
commences 12 April and finishes on 17 April.

On these courses participants will witness shorebirds in full breeding
plumage as they start their mass migration from the shores of Roebuck Bay to
their breeding grounds in the Northern Hemisphere. All aspects of shorebird
identification, biology and conservation are covered and during the course
you will visit the top birding sites of Broome.

BANDING FIELDCRAFT - 19 May to 24 May
Course Leader - Perry de Rebeira

Learn the correct and safe methods of catching, handling and processing
birds with one of Australia's best. This is a hands on course designed for
all levels of skill, with course participants visiting a range of habitats
which include mangrove, plains, woodland and shore.

**Course members will have a very special opportunity to take part in the
National Shorebird Census Winter Count at Bush Point. Travelling to Bush
Point by hovercraft on the 18 May.**

WELCOME THE WADERS BACK - 22 to 27 September
Witness the arrival of the Shorebirds as they return in their thousands from
their Siberian breeding grounds. Packed onto the beaches of Roebuck Bay,
many such as Grey Plover and Red Knot still show colourful breeding plumage.
Identification is made easy with plenty of time to observe them at their
high tide roosts. Visits to the top birding sites of Broome as well as
evening talks are all inclusive.

BIRDING IN THE WARM WINTER SUN - ONE DAY COURSES

There are twelve one-day courses scheduled during June, July and August.

BEST OF BROOME TOURS: These will be held on 6 June, 2 July and again on the
2 August.

PLAINS AND LAKES TOURS: will take place on the 4 and 24 June, the 4 and 21
July and the 4 and 21 August.

NORTHERN CREEKS & BEACHES TOURS: are scheduled for the 22 of June, 23 July
and 23 August.

Join Broome Bird Observatory for a fabulous day's birding. Throughout the
winter months Broome is an ideal place to experience excellent shorebird,
bushbird and waterbird viewing. One day courses are a great way to learn
about birds of the north - west, with the emphasis on identification and
counting skills.

Group Course Itineraries are also available and can be designed to suit you
and your birdwatching group with three, four, or five-day options.
You will visit all the top birding sites around Broome.
Full accommodation and catering, guiding and transport are included.

In addition to the above programs, Broome Bird Observatory runs a regular
interpretive tour schedule covering the shore, bush and mangrove habitats.
With a bird list of more than 300 for the Broome area, the Observatory has
recorded over one third of Australia's total bird species.
All but two of Australia's raptors and 49 species of wader have been
recorded in the area.
