Subject: HYBRID PARROTS
From: Brian Fleming <>
Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1998 12:52:51 +1000
Recently there have been quite a few reports and queries of peculiar
parrots - some hybrid, some exotic escapees. They cause a lot of
problems to birdwatchers, particularly to novices.
'Wildlife Australia'(spring 1997, p.38) illustrates a hybrid bird - King
X Crimson-winged, male - a very striking bird. Male bright red, with
side of head bright green. Narrow green bar at upper edge of back which
is black. Wings black with large vivid yellow wingbar. Rump green. Tail
apparently black. Whole underside (inc. legs) red from beak to vent.
Female reported to be all green apart from red socks - one may be shown
in picture.
Since I was at school I have kept a file (scrapbook to start with, now
filing cabinet) of bird pictures and info. It has beeen very useful
ptc. as a way of keeping records of aberrant and peculiar birds, eg
'white' magpies. It has solved a lot of puzzles.
