Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for period ending 25 September (some reports are of earlier obs).
Sorry for the hiatus; combination of work-related absence and serious family
illness. It's been an important time for us, so herewith the summary.

MISC RECORDS: **NOTE ESPECIALLY LAST TWO**

almost never recorded in suburbs for many years]
MAJOR MITCHELL COCKIES 13/9 3, just W of Ardlethan [east of Griffith, a
LONG way east of their normal range]
TAWNY FROGMOUTH NESTING 19/9 inner suburban Campbell Park, in a nest
described as "the size of a magpie's"
WHITE IBIS NESTING 21/9 ~100 at Rose's (or Rowes) Lagoon [~20k south
of Goulburn]
AUSTRALASIAN BITTERN 'booming' also 21/9 at Rose's (or Rowes) Lagoon
** GLOSSY BLACK-COCKIES 22/9 3 on inner suburban Mt Majura. MOST
SIGNIFICANTLY, ONE IS REPORTED AS HAVING A 'TWISTED TAIL'. [This follows
earlier reports of apparent courtship behaviour. They have never been
reported as breeding in the area.]
** 'NIGHTJAR' 22/9 flushed off ground in Casuarinas in inner suburban
Mount Majura [species uncertain, though observer sure of i.d. ACT falls
between ranges of White-throated to east, and Spotted to west. I am unaware
of any previous nightjar records near here]
