reference is made to your enquiry about the co-ordination of unusual
observations. The issue at first is whether the observation that you
wish to report is a rare bird for Australia. If yes, then contact the
Birds Australia Records Appraisal Committee. If the observation is a
rare bird for one of the States, then contact the appropriate records
appraisal committee for that State. If however you consider that your
observation is "unusual"but not rare, then its worthwhile reporting the
observation to the local bird group who keeps such records.
In NSW there are six groups that publish an annual report of unusual
records viz Hunter, Illawarra, Eurobodalla, Cumberland, Central Coast,
while the NSWFOC produces an annual report for the whole of NSW and
draws upon the information published in the Annual Reports and
newsletters of all the bird groups. If you are still not sure what to do
and your unusual record is for NSW, send it to me, and I will advise you
as to whether the record is unusual, and to whom therecord should be
directed.
