In November this year I will have a few days in South Island, NZ, during
which I hope to be able to do a little birding during a short (7 days)
touring trip around the island. Since I will be accompanied by non-birders,
I need to touch on highlights, and plan the trip so as to maximise my
opportunities without monopolising the trip for the others! The itinerary
will probably include Christchurch area, Arthur's Pass, west coast, Haast
Pass, Queenstown, Milford sound, perhaps Dunedin-Oamaru, perhaps Lake
Tekapo area.
I would appreciate any information as to where I would readily see the
following (in the case of Kiwis, while NOT seeking captive specimens, I
would not object if someone was known to have them visiting regularly -
feeding or some such):
Brown Kiwi
Greater Spotted Kiwi
Lesser Spotted Kiwi
Yellow-eyed Penguin
White-flippered Penguin
Fiordland Crested Penguin
Erect-crested Penguin
Royal Albatross
any other endemic (or non-Australian) albatross, petrels etc (no pelagic
trips)
Spotted Shag (and any other endemic cormorants)
Blue Duck
Brown Teal
NZ Falcon
Takahe (I wish!!!)
NZ Dotterel
Wrybill
Pied Stilt
Black Stilt
Kaka
Kea
Orange-fronted Parakeet
Long-tailed Cuckoo
Bush Wren
Rock Wren
Fernbird
Brown Creeper (pipipi)
Yellowhead
TIA and best wishes,
