Paul ???? mentions that E. O. Wilson gives 3 main reasons for the loss of
biodiversity worldwide.
For the information of list members I supply the following. In Victoria
(Australia) their are similar threatening processes that have been listed
for the same reason. They are:
- For habitat destruction:
(a) Loss of hollow-bearing tress from Victorian forests
(b) Removal of wood debris from Victorian streams
(c) Habitat fragmentation as a threatening process for fauna in Victoria
(should be added to Act by end of 1998)
- For exotic organisms
(a) The introduction of exotic organisms into Victorian marine waters
(b) The invasion of native vegetation by "environmental weeds"
- Harvesting of flora and fauna
(a) Collection of native orchids
Other processes are currently being considered by the Scientific Advisory
Committe for addition to the Act. Some of these processes have a direct
impact on bird communities and species throughout Australia.
