I was at sea with Capt. Carl Loves aboard the Sandra K on a Southern Oceans
Seabird Study Association banding trip on Saturday 27/6/98, the day before
the regular Pelagic Trip. We observed a couple of unusual species for this
area:
Little Shearwater 1
Common Diving Petrel 5 (actively foraging)
Wilson's Storm-Petrel (1), Hutton's Shearwater (9) and Great-winged Petrel
(4) present. None of these species were observed on the following day.
Additionally, as many as 10 Gibson's (Wandering) Albatross were present
and Shy Albatross were in view for the whole day. This really emphasises
how dynamic the pelagic birding situation is.
What a difference a day makes!
Of additional interest was the presence of a 3m+ Tiger Shark in 16 degree
water. In my ignorance I always thought this was a warm water species.
