G'day All,
On Sunday whilst birding at Helidon Dip, my wife Marie and a friend of
mine noticed an unusual Honeyeater amongst a flock of Fuscous
Honeyeaters (Lichenostomus flavescens), and he identified it as a
Grey-fronted (Lichenostomus plumulus) Unfortunately despite much
'spishing' and searching I failed to see the bird (a new species for
me!) Does anyone else have records of Grey-fronted Honeyeater in SE
Queensland and more specifically in the Toowoomba-Helidon area? Do they
form mixed flocks with Fuscous in other parts of Australia?
Also the following day at Samsonvale I noticed a near adult Australian
Hobby (Falco longipennis) attempting to catch a Little Friarbird
(Philemon citreogularis), after each 'stoop' (the Hobby tried at least
six attempts while I watched) the Friarbird managed to get into small
trees wherein an adult and juvenile Pied Butcherbird (Cracticus
nigrogularis)appeared to flush it out allowing the Hobby another chance.
This was happening very close to where I watched and the 'woosh' of the
falcons wings was very audible! Eventually the Hobby appeared to get
tired and retreated to some telegraph wires and hopefully the Friarbird
managed to make good its escape.
Has anyone else witnessed this sort of (assumed) cooperation?
Any response on these subjects will be gratefully received.
Regards,
Tom and Marie Tarrant
