There's another angle to GPS usage: whilst birders will happily go from dawn to dusk, partners/spouses often don't share this level of commitment and start to grizzle around morning tea-time. I have witnessed "the new toy" in the hands of a person with only a mild interest in birds and the transformation was immediate. "You find them and I'll log them." As the purpose of the Atlas project is to map bird numbers and distributions, volunteers will need all the assistance and partner support we can get! I agree with other postings that a GPS should be used only in conjunction with other navigational tools. Alex Appleman Townsville |
