I've recently finished reading Tim Flannery's new book, Throwim' Way Leg.
For anyone interested in natural history (which should include most
birdo's!) I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a ripping good yarn
guaranteed to make you want to leap out of your armchair & get into the
bush as quickly as possible. The book is the story of Tim's adventures over
the years in New Guinea - both PNG & Irian Jaya. These adventures include
the 'discovery' of a number of mammal species including the Dingiso (a
black & white tree kangaroo).Of course, it's not purely about birds but he
gives brilliant descriptions of a number of birds of paradise and others.
He also very evocatively describes the lifestyles & beliefs of some of the
tribespeople he befriends. Another point for which he earns my admiration,
at least, is that he doesn't shy away from some of the more sensative
issues concerning Indonesia's occupation of Irian Jaya.
The only criticism would have is that he seems to have a bit of a
preoccupation with penises! Read and you'll see what I mean............
