I believe that two Australian ducks were seen yesterday in Calcutta, namely Slater Duck Blewett Duck >From recent photographs it appears that the plumage of both species is remarkedly similar, being largely white all over. On certain occasions, especially when migrating, they have been seen flying with a yellow and green striped plumage. Their favoured habitat often includes sporting grounds (especially cricket ovals) and hotel swimming pools. In India, both are considered harmless but have been regarded as pests in some other parts of the world. I understand from reports coming from India that both have mates which remained in Australia. Neither has been recorded breeding yet. Keep a watch on them returning to Australia soon. Trevor Hampel Murray Bridge |
