I recommend staying at the Stirling Range Caravan Park on the northern edge
of the park, especially if you can self cater. There is a small cafe across
the road if you don't want to organise lunch / dinner. The caravan park has
some chalets and park homes.
The operators of the caravan park are very helpful. They have two or three
mud maps for walks from the caravan park. All the walks are good for birds.
Good birds in the area include Western Thornbill, Blue-breasted Fairy-wren,
Red-winged Fairy-wren, Southern Emu-wren, Elegant Parrot, Regent Parrot,
Short-billed Black-Cockatoo, Western Yellow Robin, Southern Scrub-robin,
Rufous Treecreeper, Square-tailed Kite, Little Eagle, Wedge-tailed Eagle,
Western Rosella, Red-capped Parrot, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Purple-gaped
Honeyeater, Yellow-plumed Honeyeater, Emu, Western Whipbird (possible in
mallee heath), Dusky Woodswallow.
South of the Stirlings (before the Porongorups) is some good heath land for
a variety of honeyeaters.
The karri forest in the Porongorups nearby can be good for Red-winged
Fairy-wren, White-breasted Robin, Western Rosella, Red-eared Firetail,
Rufous Treecreeper.
Just north of the park I have seen Chestnut Teal and Spotted Harrier.
