One of my colleagues here, Kevin Bartram, keeps a list of birds seen on TV.
His rules are fairly simple - the bird has to be seen on a broadcast program
(not a video), although the program can be recorded and replayed for ID
purposes. No doubt many kinds of rule variations are possible (Kookaburras
heard in old Tarzan movies?). His TV list is currently about 1770. He
does, however, keep this list completely separate from his standard live
wild bird list.
