Lorne - I don't know get to Nelson Bay very often, but here's what I
know.
>From Shoal Bay, just east of Nelson Bay, there is an OK patch of bush
with walking tracks that take you up to the top of Mount Tomaree. You
can also pick up some seabirds when you get to the top. Also, there's
some reasonable bush behind the retirement village at Shoal Bay (enter
from the bike track that starts near the caravan park).
There's not much heath in the Nelson Bay area, that I'm aware of. I
always go to an area in Newcastle for heathland birds - the Awabakal
Nature Reserve, which straddles the coastal suburbs of Dudley and
Redhead. This is a good spot for Southern Emu-wren, and the only spot I
know of around here where you can find Tawny-crowned Honeyeater.
Good luck with Masked Owl - I can't help with this one at all.
