It is not unusual to see flocks of spine-tailed swifts appearing ahead of a weather front in this area (Ipswich, Qld). On several occasions, I've observed that the swifts tend to gather around the crest of Emerald Hill, at Brassall, where there is both a reservoir and a telecommunications tower. The swifts seem to repeatedly fly directly toward the dishes on the tower, veering at the last second, then turn and repeat the same flight path over and over. It appears that the tower has some kind of attraction for the birds. Is anyone aware of similar observations, or of an explanation for this behaviour?
