Firstly, I must make it clear that this is not an area in medicine for which
I make any claims to special expertise.
However, I have not heard of either Allocasuarinas or Typha as particularly
allergenic. The most commonly implicated allergens in asthma as far as I
know are grass pollens (rye-grass, etc), house-dust mite and animal danders
(eg from cats). I share Frank O'Connor's view that the wind-blown
flowers/seeds/spores (which is it?) of Typha are much too large to act as
much of an allergen.
I wonder if we have an Allergist as a birder and member of birding-aus?
It's certainly possible as medical practitioners seem to be rather
over-represented amongst birders (something to do with our penchant for
listing or diagnosis or obsessional traits??).
Cheers.
Richard.
