G'dy from up over . . .
A request for help:
In late February I will be lucky enough to spend a week or more on the
island of New Britain, at Walindi Plantation, near the town of Kimbe
on Kimbe Bay. I'll be working, mainly, but expect to have a few days
free for birding. Can anyone help with suggestions of where to go,
what to look for, or how to recognize it when I find it?
In August, 1996 I spent a weekend at Walindi Plantation, birding with
a knowledgeable acquaintance who's no longer in PNG, alas. I saw
several endemics, but relied on my friend to take me to them and also
to identify them -- so I don't have much to build on for this trip.
Tools I have to help me are Beehler et al.'s Birds of New Guinea, Bill
Principe's check list keyed to Beehler, and The PNG Bird Society's
Birds of Papua New Guinea species record card, which lists (but of
course does not describe or illustrate) island endemics. I also
expect I can lay hands on a car and a map while there.
I'd appreciate any and all advice and suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
