Lake Joondalup is a fair-sized permanent, fresh-water, coastal lake in the
northern suburbs of Perth approx 25 kms north of the city centre (and very
easily accessible via the Mitchell Freeway). It is well-known to Perth
bird-watchers and is included in Ron van Delft's excellent "Birding Sites
Around Perth" (the superb second revised and enlarged edition of which is
now on sale for less than $20 - from Birds Oz among others).
On holiday in our "home town" for Christmas we called by the small (approx
250 by 150 metres) southern section of the lake (the part south of Ocean
Reef Road - which now divides the lake into 2 unequal parts) and in some 30
minutes of easy birding were rewarded by an extraordinary richness of
waterbirds for such a small and easily accessible suburban wetland only 150
metres from the nearest houses:
