Dear Friend,
Who are these funny-looking birds that are so focused on their dinner?
They are the black-faced spoonbill, they are endangered, and their winter
feeding area is about to be destroyed.
In the winter these graceful dancers migrate with their remaining friends
and
family (550 are all that's left) to live in the Chi-gu Lagoon in coastal
Taiwan. Fed by waters flowing from Jade Mountain, this lagoon is a rich,
interesting, beautiful, productive slice of what remains of the region's
natural heritage.
In this bird's winter home a David vs. Goliath battle is being played out.
The
national government is poised to approve the plan that would locate an
industrial complex (including a petrochemical plant) in the Chi-gu Lagoon.
This action would undermine an historic and thriving fishing industry and
send
the black-faced spoonbill into an extinction vortex.
You can help. What started in January 1997 as a studio project in two
university classrooms (National Taiwan University and University of
California Berkeley) has become a bi-coastal organization, Spoonbill Action
Voluntary Echo (SAVE). Following two successful conferences held in Taiwan
in
May (attended by the American students and their faculty) SAVE formed to
help
the fishermen in the Chi-gu District to stop this industrial complex and
save
the spoonbill. David Brower, a life-long environmental warrior, has since
joined us. (We want to stop the petrochemical plant, but you should know
SAVE
is also working with the fishermen to develop an alternative plan that would
strengthen the fishing, aquaculture, and farming industries that have
provided
a long-standing economic base.)
Time is of the essence. It is anticipated that the Taiwan national
government will make a ruling on the petrochemical plant within the next few
months. This could be the spoonbill's last winter.
