Evening all,
The recent Twitchathon in the east was also enjoyed by a
team of "locals", the BBO Barwits, who at the end of a hectic twenty four
hours had identified 145 species and added some $336 to the cause of the
Black-eared Miner.
Our team of ten (10) had perhaps the most national and international
representation of twitchers in Australia that week-end.
The team consisted of team leaders, Chris and Jan from England (BBO); Chris
and Heidi from New South Wales; Rob and Gail from Victoria (VWSG) Jonny
originally from Germany but also time spent in South Africa and South
America; Ted from the U.S.A; Danny from Victoria, who recently passed his
pH.D in how to fall off the back of a two man hovercraft gracefully into the
mud of Roebuck Bay; and myself from Broome.
Unanimously voted as the the highlight of the twenty four hours was at 3.45
am at Tagarana Bore. In the chilly darkness, the brilliant sound of the
dawn Chorus gradually started with the Pied Butcherbirds providing the
melody, the Pheasant Coucals a bit of rhythm, with bass coming from the
proud Tawny Frogmouths and their three hatchlings, the Magpies and the
Blue-winged Kookaburras combined to try and drown the others out and the
White-gaped and Singing Honeyeaters joined in with the Double-barred Finches
and Magpie Larks and many others to produce a sound that I hope always to
remember.
