The Third NTT World Bird Count started yesterday (1 Oct). The 1996 count was a geat success, as follows: quote At the second "NTT World Bird Count" held in 1996, we received birding reports from more than 80,000 people in 81 countries and regions. The total number of species compiled from the reports reached as many as 5,317 species, exceeding by far the results of the 1st "NTT World Bird Count" in 1995. Based on this number NTT donated \1,000 per species, a total of 5,317,000 Yen to BirdLife International to be used for its nature conservation activities in Asia. endquote Visit http://www.wnn.or.jp/wnn-n/w-bird/english/index.html for details of the 1996 and 1997 counts.
