Following on from the shot albatross incidents, I am sorry to have to report the deaths of up to 30 bush stone curlews on Magnetic Island due to poisoning. The Dept of Environment is investigating the cause of the poisoning; late last week a person was interviewed in relation to the incident but was later released. The majority of the 2500 residents and visitors are said to be appalled by the poisoning: many residents hand feed the birds so administering poison would have been relatively easy. The birds suffered dreadfully taking up to 12 hours to die. Alex Appleman North Queensland |
