ALBATROSS SHOT AT BERMAGUI THURSDAY 25/09/97
Interseted birders, must see this.
We have been informed of a "Wandering" Albatross ashore at Bares Beach, NSW
(200 km
south of Wollongong) by the local members of the Wildlife Information Rescue &
Emergencey Service (W.I.R.E.S). Initaily, Pam Bates managed to stabilise the
bird by
administering "Hartman's Solution" but, unfortunately, the bird has died,
succumbing to
blood loss and shock.
The carcass of the dead albatross arrived at SOSSA H.Q. today, Saturday 27th
September,
and post mortem examination indicated that the bird had been shot by a high
powered
rifle. This follows a similar incident east of Sydney on September 13, 1997,
which is
under investigation. From an initial examination it is believd that this bird
may be
from the Maquarie Island population, which is critically endangered (as few as
5
breeding pairs in any given season). The International Humane Society has been
informed
by SOSSA and the matter has been referred to Federal Authorities.
