Summer is here and with it comes the waders/shorebirds from Siberia and
other places north. With the summer also comes Jetskis with their
energetic riders. Little is known about what happens when these two meet in
our bays, estuaries and coastlines. Australia's commitments under Ramsar
and JAMBA should not be disregarded by the users of ever increasing numbers
of leisure craft on our waterways.
Should you witness such a meeting , we would be interested in a report of
its effect on the birds. How, Where, When, State of Tide also amount of
wash may be important. Does the meeting occur on a tidal sandbank? Don't
forget the date.
This information will be used by the Australasian Wader Studies Group and
the Queensland Wader Study Group for implementing a policy and code of
ethics to regulate Jetskis and other craft in and near National Parks and
areas listed as important for the protection and conservation of Shorebirds.
If you do not wish to use birding/aus send direct to Conservation Officer,
Australasian Wader Studies Group c/o RAOU. Please keep this request in
mind when out and about this summer.
