Eric, thank you for raising this. Vehicles are driven along some of our beaches still and the beach zone favored is the zone inhabited by the bivalve Eugaree or Pippi, favored bait of the surf fisherman and food for the oyster-catchers. Oyster-catchers are now an uncommon sighting on the beaches of North Stradbroke I. as a result of the disturbance to the bird and of the destruction of their food supply. Resting terns and gulls are constantly disturbed, and the safety of children is a constant concern. I understand that the Shire Council at Gympie controlling the beaches at Rainbow Beach and Cooloolah will not impose a registration and fee system for 4WD owners because this would deter them and thereby reduce local trade.
