Shearwaters and Hitchcock

I remember reading somewhere that the inspiration for Hitchcock's film The
Birds was an incident when, owing to adverse weather, a very large number of
migrating shearwaters got disoriented and descended one night on a small
town on either the east or west coast of the US. They weren't attacking
anyone of course, but they were disoriented and distressed and were dashing
themslves into windows, and so forth, further disoriented by lights?and of
course there were large numbers of them. I even think that Hitchcock used
amateur film shot at the time for some of the shots.

Can anyone confirm/clarify/amplify this story?
