If Pink Robin is on your "to be seen" list, maybe you should drop in at
the Geelong Botanic Gardens (about 80km west of Melbourne, Victoria) on
your way down to the next Portland pelagic, or whatever. Pink Robin
"brown birds" can often be seen in the rose beds near the conservatory
just inside the front gates, in late autumn-winter. Last year there
didn't appear to be any, but this year there are at least 3-4 birds.
With some friends last Sunday, I enjoyed excellent views of two Pink
Robin "brown birds" foraging in the rose beds and hopping around on the
lawns nearby. Otherwise lots of Eastern Spinebills, Red Wattlebirds,
Yellow Thornbills, etc. .. and maybe a couple of Rose Robins too. Keep
an eye out for the white morph Grey Goshawk if you're there before the
crowds. BTW, the robins take no notice of the noisy crowds, so any time
of day is OK.
