Hi to all raptor watchers -
We know there are a lot of you out there - with the currently 695 people
registered on the Bird of Prey Watch project (Phase 2), and nearly 10,000
completed sheets received from over 300 of you. The level of participation
is higher than it was during Phase 1, and a lot of useful data is flowing in.
Unsurprisingly, the great majority of BOP Watchers, and of completed sheets,
come from the more populated parts of Australia. The database currently
holds no data at all for six zones (covering Arnhem Land, the Channel
Country and the Great Victorian, Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts), with a
further 13 zones with very insufficient coverage.
If anybody is planning a trip, or intending to join a tour, through the more
remote parts of Australia, it would be really great if you could take a few
BOP Watch sheets along and fill them in. We do need coverage of these
areas, in all seasons, in order to get a clear picture of population changes
and seasonal movements. It is not a difficult thing to do - the survey is
based on noting the presence and numbers of birds of prey seen from a moving
vehicle, and it can be a lot of fun on a long journey.
