Dear Sea-birders,
Up-date on Albatross season Wollongong. N.S.W. May-July 1997. Good season with
plenty
of Yellow-nosed Albatrosses arriving in May-June 17 birds captured, ringed and
released
on the Sandra "K" by Captain Carl Loves, Lindsay Smith and others. Including a
French
ringed bird from Amsterdam Island (South Indian Ocean).
July 11th, Wandering Albatrosses in good numbers, 5 birds captured by Lindsay
Smith,
Harry Battam (SOSSA), Paul Rebuck of (New South Wales Parks & Wildlife Service).
Another 17 birds captured on 21st July, L. Smith & H. Battam (SOSSA), birds
included 2
that were first ringed by (NSWASG) New South Wales Albatross Study Group, in
1959. The
birds were of unknown age when first captured.
Origins of birds caught this season include: Auckland Islands New Zealand,
Crozet
Islands South Indian Ocean and possibly a bird from South Georgia Island South
Atlantic
Ocean.
Good numbers of Giant Cuttlefish (Sepia apama), attracting birds. Average size
of
cuttlefish in the excess of 1 metre and 15 + Kilogrames.
A few juvenile Shy Albatross observed & Black-browed Albatross plentiful
inshore feeding
on cuttlefish. At least 30% young birds, first winter.
