I am pretty happy with a Panasonic RQ-L319 Mini Cassette Recorder. It's
very cheap (I think under US$40 here; I had to order it directly from the
Panasonic distributor). It has a counter, so you can find things and play
them back; it also features a voice-activation system designed for recording
meetings or something, which is a nuisance that can be turned off. With an
additional battery-powered microphone, it can even record a lot of bird songs.
