Niels Dreyer's posting is right in one respect. IF the oceans warm by 5 deg C there will be devastating effects on a lot more than just seabirds. However, latest predictions from climate modeling are that this is unlikely to happen. Global warming is now predicted to take place a lot more slowly than previously thought and to be not as severe as previously indicated. John Howard may therefore be justified in his stand on global warming but unfortunately, he has expressed his reasons as being of an economic as opposed to environmental nature. As usual, the almighty dollar is being used as the justification for action or lack of it, rather than scientific facts and what is overall, good for the planet. Still, as Ron from Brisbane commented, this may be due to 'a general shortage of good second hand brains', particularly among those who voted the politicians in , ie all of us. Paul Osborn |
