Alex Appleman asked Where do superb parrots go to in winter? and Where
can i see them in NSW or Victoria?
There is an article on P.swainsonii in Stephen Garnett, ed., Threatened
and Extinct Birds of Australia (RAOU Report 82, 2nd edition 1993).
According to Garnett, the Superb Parot occurs from northern central New
South Wales south to the Barmah Forest area of Northern victoria. They
breed in the southern part of their range, particularly along the
Murray, Edward and Murrumbidgee Rivers and the wooded slopes of the
Great Dividing Range betwen Canberra and Cootamundra. After fledging,
part of the population moves to Northern NSW for winter.
To see a Superb, your best bet might well be an aviary. In 1988 it was
thought that there were fewer than 5000 breeding pairs. There are
however, now 20,000 birds held by Australian breeders.
Taylor & Day, Birds of the ACT, (National Parks Association of the ACT,
1993) state correctly that you can see small wild flocks in the northern
part of the ACT, Hall, Gundaroo area. You know you've seen one by the
long thin tail.
