According to The Birds of South America vol 1 by Robert Ridgely & Guy
Tudor (Oxford University Press) it seems most likely that the Large
Pampas Finch is now known as Great Pampa-finch (Embernagra platensis) as
Gil says.The genus belongs to the family Emberizinae,there are two spp
in the genus the other being Pale-throated Serra-finch (E.longicauda).
E.platensis is described as a large olive finch of damp grasslands,bill
yellowish-orange,head olive-grey,olive upperparts,back streaked
blackish,wing-edging yellowish-olive,pale grey underparts. It is common
in tall grassy areas often perching on fence posts or low bushes. Flight
is weak and jerky. It ranges from East Bolivia to Central
Argentina,Paraguay and Uruguay.Does that fit any description you may
have?
