I bought a Garmin 38 via the internet several months ago
(http://www.sni.net/~lwjames/GGPS.html). I imagine they can be found at other
locations as well.
It is light, can upload/download from PC (~$60? extra for cable), can plug into
cigarette lighter to save batteries. Even using just aa batteries, I get 8-12
hours from 2 batteries.
I find it accurate to within 100 or so metres. It does take a while to get a
good fix in heavily wooded or closed terrain, but its quite adequate.
All up I paid < $AUS400 for the unit, PC cables and software, cigarette lighter
cable, and postage.
If you have an extra $100 or so, I'd recommend a more flash model that has a
detachable antenna; this makes for more accurate readings and easier viewing if
using from an car.

My two baht,
