I have just read the message about magpies gathering wire. I haven't seen anything like this, but it reminded me of the magpies I watched at a nest last year. There was an adult and a young one (still very grey on the chest). For days the adult sat on the nest, whilst the young one hung around. Then to my astonishment, the roles were reversed and for about four days it was the juvenile which did the sitting and the adult would come backwards and forwards to feed the juvenile! After that they both disappeared so I get the feeling it was all a bird version of a phantom pregnancy. Annabel Hoskins |
