I vaguely remember reading something about this so perhaps it is commonplace. Driving this morning, I frightened a White-faced Heron from a carcass beside the road. The carcass (the lower half of an Eastern Grey kangaroo), was not heavily decomposed (no strong smell) and had no visible maggots. It did have many flies on it which I assume the Heron was eating.
