After a number of unsuccessful attempts to get out from Portland (western
Victoria) in June, they finally made it on Sunday 9th July.

Brett Jarrett reports these sightings:

Wandering Albatross 2
Royal Albatross 1
Yellow-nosed Albatross 8
Black-browed Albatross 60+
Shy Albatross c.160
Fluttering Shearwater c.20
Sooty Shearwater 2
Short-tailed Shearwater 2
Cape Petrel 3 or 4
Great-winged Petrel 8 - 10
Southern Giant Petrel 5
Fairy Prion 40 - 50
Grey-backed Storm-petrel 6+
Wilson's Strom-petrel 1
White-faced Storm-petrel 2

Also observed: Australasian Gannet
                Black-faced Shag
                White-fronted Tern 2
                Crested Tern
                Peregrine Falcon (!)

Sorry- I didn't ask Brett about the weather, apart from the fact that it
became rough later in the day ahead of a cold front (which gave Melbourne
its coldest July day since 1901 and dumped a lot of snow on my wife and I
who were XC skiing at Mt Stirling :-) ).

I'm booked on the next trip (30th July) so it will probably blow a gale!!rch
of goodies such as Lesser Noddy, Roseate Tern, Red-tailed Tropicbird
and hopefully other pelagic rarities.
