That's almost step-for-step what I did in one of my various attempts, except
you used an ext2 fs instead of an ext3 fs. I tried again using ext2 on the off
chance that was the important difference, but it still didn't work. I even
tried the other, non-"feb282011" image and that didn't work either.
I managed to locate a 2GB microsd card, and tried using that. It, too, failed
with the gibberish during boot as in my original post.
I did get it to boot by placing it in the rather odd configuration of loading
the kernel and initrd from the microsd card and using the "large" sd card as /,
but that still generates random I/O failures while running, as well as some
other unusual side effects (I get a different MAC address on eth0 every boot,
for example).
I'm starting to suspect the actual SD reader hardware/firmware is damaged or
malfunctioning, somehow, as it keeps introducing weird errors into any
filesystem mounted as / (when it boots, anyway) and the cards check out with no
bad sectors. Is there any way for me to test for problems with that? And what
can be done if it is a problem?
Thanks.
