I've been trying to upgrade my TS-7800 to the 2.6.34 kernel, but
unsuccessfully. I keep encountering really odd errors during boot.

What I've tried:

1: Download 2.6.34 512MB image from TS' FTP site.
2: Use dd to copy that onto an SD card. I have both an 8GB and a 16GB card I've
tried that have the same problem; the 16GB one I purchased today to make sure
the card wasn't somehow broken.
3: Boot the TS-7800 in this configuration. At this point, it works.
4: Use gparted on the card to resize partition 4 to occupy the rest of the
space on the disk. (I've also tried using fdisk destructively and then creating
a new ext3 fs, that didn't work any better.)
5: Boot the TS-7800 in this configuration. Then this happens over serial
console:
>> Booting Linux (using SD Card)...
INIT: version 2.86 booting
Starting the hotplug events dispatcher: udevd.
Synthesizing the initial hotplug events...done.
Waiting for /dev to be fully populated...done.
/etc/rcS.d/S04mountdevsubfs.sh: line 20: [: missing `]'
/etc/rcS.d/S04mountdevsubfs.sh: line 41: unexpected EOF while looking for
matching ``'
/etc/rcS.d/S04mountdevsubfs.sh: line 48: syntax error: unexpected end of file
/etc/rcS.d/S10checkroot.sh: line 18: SULÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿðOGIN=no: command not
found
/etc/rcS.d/S10checkroot.sh: line 39: syntax error near unexpected token `)'
/etc/rcS.d/S10checkroot.sh: line 39:
`6RæöFRÀ µ+ßZ¿ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ2"7vFB2öâÖBFWf6R÷"fÆRFBÖ&RöâÖB 2FWf6RÀ 22FRÖ÷VçB&ÖWFW'2f÷"FWfg2fÆW77FVÒà 0  WV2ÂcÂöWF2ög7F

This goes on for about 3 pages before init gives up and just stops. The exact
text that shows up and the files that fail to run differ somewhat each time,
but the effect is essentially the same.

I've tried running the AVR reflash utility in the hope that somehow that would
fix it, it had no effect. As I stated earlier, I tried acquiring a new SD card,
that didn't help either. e2fsck says the FS on partition 4 is healthy even with
-f, and the card works just fine in my Ubuntu VM. I even tried rebuilding the
2.6.34 kernel from the source download TS has on their FTP, that didn't work
either.

If I put it on onboard flash boot (JP1 off) which still has 2.6.21, it boots
successfully using sdroot. I also seem to have a fairly old FPGA rev (3) if I
read this list correctly that 10 is the newest, I'm not sure if that matters or
not.

Does anyone have any idea why this doesn't work? There seem to be enough posts
here of people getting the board to work with 2.6.34 that I imagine I have to
be missing something obvious, but the only conclusion I can draw is that the
2.6.34 driver does not work correctly with SDHC cards, and I'm hoping that is
not the case.
