I've been copying programs to the board with the SCP command and it keeps the executable flag.

This a deliberate step to slightly improve security. To have a file arrive and be immediately executable makes it a bit easier to write worms and the like.

There is a way to get around it. If you write to a file that has already got execute permission, FTP does not reset it to not-execute. But you cannot write to a program that is executing as you will get 'text file busy'.

What I do is ftp to program.new. Then manually stop the program, cp program.new program and restart program. If you set chmod +x on program.new once, you will not have to repeat that step.

But if a simple chmod is something that causes you grief, I can only suggest life is far to easy for you as it is!

I find command line recall makes the implementation of the steps above really quick and simple.
